Dr. Richard H. Ekman
President, Council of Independent Colleges

Foreword: Before being appointed president of CIC in September of 2000, Dr. Richard Ekman served as vice president for programs of the Atlantic Philanthropic Service Company. Ekman served from 1991 to 1999 as secretary of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, where, in addition to his overall administrative responsibilities, he focused especially on issues in higher education, technology, libraries, area studies, and faculty development. His campus experience includes appointments as vice president and dean of Hiram College, and as assistant to the provost of the University of Massachusetts at Boston. rekman@cic.nche.edu

Dr. Antoine M. Garibaldi
President, Gannon University

Chapter 1: Antoine M. Garibaldi, Ph.D., is the sixth president of Gannon University, a Catholic diocesan university in Erie, Pennsylvania. Nationally recognized for his more than 30 years of teaching and administrative experience in secondary and higher education, as well as in the federal government, President Garibaldi is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and the author of 10 books and monographs and more than 75 research articles and chapters. garibald001@gannon.edu

Dr. Daniel D. Reneau
President, Louisiana Tech University

Chapter 2: Dr. Daniel D. Reneau currently serves as President of Louisiana Tech University and holds the Arthur T. Prescott Professorship in Biomedical Engineering. He holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from Louisiana Tech University and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Clemson University.

Dr. Reneau joined the Louisiana Tech faculty in Chemical Engineering in 1967 and established the Biomedical Engineering Department in 1972. He served as department head in Biomedical Engineering until 1980 when he assumed the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs at Louisiana Tech University. In 1987, he was selected as the 13th President of Louisiana Tech University.

Dr. Reneau has completed 40 years at Louisiana Tech University, 20 of those years as President. reneau@latech.edu

Dr. Patricia P. Cormier
President, Longwood University

Chapter 3:  Dr. Patricia Cormier became president of Longwood University in July 1996. Under her leadership, Longwood College became Longwood University in 2001 and concluded its first comprehensive campaign one year ahead of schedule. During her tenure, she oversaw the reconstruction of Ruffner Hall and Longwood’s signature Rotunda following a devastating fire in April 2001 that damaged or destroyed more than 200,000 square feet of building space.

Dr. Cormier has been an administrator in higher education for over 38 years, serving as chief academic officer at Winthrop University, key vice presidential and academic positions at the University of Pennsylvania, and vice president for development and alumni relations at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Cormier has masters and doctoral degrees in education from the University of Virginia and a bachelor's degree in health education from Boston University. cormierpp@longwood.edu

Dr. William J. Carroll
President, Benedictine University

Chapter 4:  Dr. William Carroll has served as president of Benedictine University since July 1995, and as President of Springfield College, Illinois, since May 2003. Carroll is a visible and active leader in both communities, serves on many boards and has received numerous awards for his leadership in education and higher education.

In 2003, Benedictine University established a unique partnership with Springfield College in Illinois, for the college was on the verge of closure. Since that date, their enrollment has increased considerably, third and fourth year college classes are offered, Adult Education classes have begun, and SCI is now in a competitive field with other higher education institutions in that area. wcarroll@ben.edu

Dr. Daniel J. Julius
Vice President for Academic Affairs and Research, The University of Alaska

Chapter 4:  Daniel J. Julius is the Vice President for Academic Affairs for the University of Alaska System. Prior to that he served as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for Benedictine University in Illinois, as a Visiting Scholar in the University of California System, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of San Francisco, Assistant Vice Chancellor for the California State University System, and as Director of Personnel Services for the Vermont State College System. His research is in the areas of organizational behavior, leadership, higher education and industrial labor relations, and he has held visiting faculty positions at Stanford, the University of New Hampshire, the International Labor Organization in Geneva, and at Universities in China, Spain and France. He was educated at the Ohio State University, Columbia and Stanford Universities. daniel.julius@alaska.edu

John F. Brennan
President, Green Mountain College

Chapter 5:  John F. Brennan assumed the presidency of Green Mountain College in September 2002, after serving 10 years as Dean of the Sawyer School of Management at Suffolk University on Beacon Hill, Boston. Earlier he had served at Skidmore College as the F. William Harder Chair of Management, a Visiting Professor of Management at the University of Limerick in Ireland and as Visiting Lecturer of Management at Lally School of Management, at RPI, and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

President Brennan served as a CEO in industry from the 60’s to the 80’s. He holds an AB in English from Williams College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He has also received Honorary Degrees from the University of East Anglia (UK) DCL and Quincy College.

Douglas E. Zemke
President, Millikin University

Chapter 6:  Douglas E. Zemke has been president of Millikin University since 2003. Since becoming president, he has focused the University’s energies on leadership development, revitalizing curriculum with an emphasis on developing international/global educational opportunities, establishing fiscal responsibility, and building strong ties to Millikin alums and the Decatur community. A 1966 Millikin graduate, Zemke served as Dean of the Tabor School of Business from January 1998 to July 2001 and is a former member of the Millikin Board of Trustees from 1995-1998. He also has more than 30 years of business management experience in the telecommunications industry with the former Illinois Bell, AT&T, and Cincinnati Bell. He retired as senior vice president at Cincinnati Bell Telephone in December 1997, where he led all activities associated with the restructuring of the business from 1993-1995.

Dr. Martin Nadelman
President, Alamance Community College

Chapter 7:  A community college president for more than 16 years, Dr. Nadelman, the current President of Alamance Community College, has more than 35 years of experiences at four high educational institutions. Dr. Nadelman received his Ed.D. in Educational Administration, Policy, and Planning from the University of Maryland – College Park, with a M.Ed. in Student Personnel from the University of Vermont. He also has a B.S. in Economics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Brad L. Janis
President, The Art Institute of Charlotte

Chapter 8:  Brad L. Janis became President of The Art Institute of Charlotte in March 2006. He came to Charlotte from The Art Institute of California, Orange County, where he had been Vice President for Academic Affairs. Janis joined The Art Institutes system of colleges in 1995 as an instructor, then Assistant Dean of Education at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh before going to Southern California.

Dr. Walter M. Bortz
President, Hampden-Sydney College

Chapter 9:  Walter M. Bortz III became the twenty-third president of Hampden-Sydney College in July of 2000. Dr. Bortz has guided the College to record levels of enrollment and fund raising during his tenure, and has spearheaded the effort to draft a new long range plan incorporating a master plan for a new library and a fine arts center, among other renovations and improvements to the campus. President Bortz is widely involved in the leadership of higher education organizations in the Commonwealth and beyond. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia, a trustee of the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges, served as head of the President’s Council for the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, and serves on the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities. He also is active in the Council of Independent Colleges and a member of the NCAA Presidents Council.

Dr. Carol J. Guardo
Past President, Saint Joseph College

Chapter 10:  Dr. Carol J. Guardo’s career in higher education spans four decades of experience. She has served as professor, dean, provost, president, trustee, accreditor, and consultant. She is a former president of Rhode Island College and the Great Lakes College Association. She also served as interim president at the College of Saint Benedict and, most recently, at her alma mater, Saint Joseph College.

Widely published in the field of psychology and higher education, she has been a frequent speaker at major higher education association meetings. Her consulting work focuses on strategic planning, presidential evaluation, academic restructuring, and board governance and development.
