Navigating between and among various institutional constituencies is one of the primary challenges of any presidency. Stakeholders include trustees, faculty, staff, students, parents, administrators, alumni, donors, community groups, and institutional partners. Most presidents would agree the two groups most critical to the success of their presidencies are trustees and faculty. Each group has expectations of what the president and the institution should be doing. Sharing information between groups and getting them to support the same institutional agenda is an ongoing presidential task.
How should presidents meet external expectations that are often at odds with each other? In her chapter, Dr. Guardo provides guidance on bringing constituent groups to accept, foster, and pursue the same values and institutional directions. She provides valuable insight on consensus building within an institutional setting.
